WMDD Program Helps Students Bridge The Employment Gap Banner

In an effort to help graduating students transition from school into the exciting world of app creation, the Langara College Web and Mobile Design and Development program held their first ever Industry Networking Event.

The event, hosted at the stunning Salesforce offices at 333 Seymour street, was curated in a way that was both fun and educational. It was planned by the WMDD instructors to give students real time to learn one on one with some of the top industry professionals, while providing a structure to eliminate those awkward moments and avoid the pitfalls that come with regular networking events. The students said that this was helpful to them in getting over their fears.

“I’m a new person in this community and I didn’t know a lot of people. I didn’t know how to network, but because it was structured, I think that it was really nice,” said Sudiksha Kumar, a WMDD student in her final semester.

Students said that the games and activities helped to ease the conversation and make it feel more natural, something that was missing from other networking events they had been to.

The easy environment that was created was fruitful, and many of the mentors said that this group of students impressed them. Caitlyn Quan of Salesforce said that the students were very “motivated”.

“They had great questions and they’re very excited to jump into this industry,” she said.

Every student and mentor agreed that the event was a success. The meeting between the current leaders and the new stock entering the market was planned and executed according to plan, and everyone walked away with fresh ideas and new contacts.

Students were incredibly thankful for this opportunity provided by their instructors, and highly recommend that other programs host similar events for graduating students.
