Make your dream career a reality: Why BC grads recommend this web and app design program

Got your degree but still struggling to find work in BC? Well you’re not alone, as job opportunities have declined since 2022.
As the employment landscape is rapidly changing, some fields of study have become far more competitive in the job market than they once were.
It’s a common issue, but not an unsolvable one, as the tech industry in BC is seeing several booms despite the tough times.

Post-degree learning
A first-step you can take to break into this market is through Langara College‘s Web & Mobile App Design & Development (WMDD) program, which gives graduates essential skills to succeed in the tech industry.
The two specialized streams — Designer and Developer — collaborate to solve real-world business and user problems through web and mobile applications.
Plus, the programs offer benefits like flexible study options with online, in-person evening and Saturday classes, project-based learning that builds practical skills, and cutting-edge tools and technology that’ll take your projects to the next level.
Graduates can get prepared to tackle several positions within the tech industry, including UX and UI designers, software developers, product designers, CMS managers, full-stack developers, and more.
With a program that helps you gain recognized credentials and certifications in Canada, your job pool is about to become a whole lot wider.

Meet Aleksei and Alex
Alex Vasilyev is one WMDD graduate who began working just two weeks after receiving his diploma. Today, he is a UX Designer and Developer at an international software company called Staffbase.
Alex initially considered a wide range of programs related to web design and software development but was drawn to Langara for its emphasis on both.
“The program offered an opportunity to develop my coding skills as well as my creative skills,” he explains. “It turns out, that is what I enjoy doing. I can’t imagine writing code for eight hours every day, so being able to do a little bit of both is very rewarding!”
Alex especially enjoyed the project-based learning and group project opportunities, saying they “improved everyone’s skills for future collaboration at the workplace.” These skills would indeed prove valuable for Alex, who was able to remain at his job throughout several rounds of post-pandemic layoffs over four years.
Meanwhile, graduate Aleksei Orlov already had some experience in web development when he sought out Langara’s WMDD program to learn how to build real projects and get job-ready.
“It had a great mix of hands-on projects, modern technologies, and connections to Vancouver’s tech community, which made it the right choice for me,” he explains.
Knowing theory is important, but so is building a portfolio — something Aleksei was able to master during his time at Langara. He also made lots of valuable connections with classmates and instructors, leading to opportunities and an expanded professional network.
“I wanted a program that would help me get a job in tech, and that’s exactly what it did,” says Aleksei. “It wasn’t just about coding — it also helped me learn how to work on a team, manage projects, and think like a developer. It’s a fast-paced program, but if you’re serious about getting into tech, it’s worth it.”
